Arrrrrgh the website woes!

Friday, September 14th, 2007
There’s a hangover from the DNS problem from last month and I am a worthless webmaster that it took me so long and a phone call from a reader to realize it.

The fedback form on my main website is not working for almost a month! Can you imagine the amount of business I’ve successfully lost through not bothering to check all through the site when the old problem was sorted?

I don’t know what the problem is. The form returns an internal server error that speak of premature ending of headers or similar. I feel like pulling my hair out. I didn’t notice that I hadn’t received mail from that form for a MONTH!!!???!!!

It still hasn’t been sorted. The love affair with the hosting providers continues with its predictable monotony, where their first response was that the form was fine. FINE? Did they seriously imagine I opened a ticket to ask them how they felt my form looked? Damn it, I don’t care how pretty or ugly that form is, until it starts working!

For those who are new and clueless about what this “main site” is, its the site http://www.wide-aware.com This site is my bread and butter in the offline world, my learning curve in the online world, and an obsession overall.

Looking perfect at the end of the day

Monday, September 10th, 2007

Oh I so hate it when I look all worn out and ready to recycle and other people look like they just woke up and freshened up.

Perhaps that’s how it is. I think all these flawless make up and creams are only part of the story. The truly fantastic looking people are just lazy bums snoring their days away while responsible people like me work so hard. :D

I seem to have abandoned this blog

Its sad. Honestly, I love the intention behind my creation of this blog. I don’t know what stops me from being regular here.

Well, its all going to change. I have planned to be more aware of the world around me and use the blog as an excellent reason to hunt out quirky and enjoyable things in life.

Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

Uh…… I couldn’t resist, but what do I say?

I mean, come on, we’re speaking of a remake of Sholay with the old hero now the villain? Never mind that. But hey, Sholay has a rustic charm. How does that fit in with a cell phone addict modern world? Not too well - I guess.

It was one thing to remake Don, where the portrayal of the underworld and glitz could to a great extent be enhanced by modern film techniques, even then the hardcore fans come out vaguely dissatisfied. But when it comes to one of the greatest films to hit Hindi industry, I think there is a huge challenge here that is unlikely to be met.

If you’ve seen Sholay, its not only about the story, memorable characters and action. Its the ambiance. Take away the ambiance, and I don’t see how the film can remain the same. Gabbar is a dacoit the sight of him walking in his hideout taking his men to task is one of the defining moments of the film. Its not only his personality and power, but also an impression of tough men roughing it out in the wilds and claiming their territory.

It may be modern to have gangsters in the city, but its certainly not Sholay - Sholay is NOT a city film. Perhaps Ramu should simply have called the script inspired from Sholay and left it at that. I doubt if many would find enough to label it a copy even then.

If this film survives the box office for the number of hours that Sholay reigned in days….

I don’t see it satisfying anyone.

To put things in a nutshell is the quote of an SMS from an outraged critic, that made Ram Gopal Verma himself admit the facts pointed out and publicly regret creating this film:

“Hi Sir. To call Aag a piece of junk would be demeaning junk. What happened to the colours of Rangeela and the grit of Satya? No clear story, meaningless script, obsession with dark lighting, weak screenplay, and songs that are too high-pitched and outdated. You were in a hurry while shooting. Fast editing, nonsensical expressions, no romance, horrifying background music and choreography, cinematography is horrid, bad clothes, bad hoardings, bad amateurish dialogues, bad characterizations with no emotional graph for the characters, leaving the actors free to ham, outdated action, emotionless scenes, no comedy, no colour. You should sit and watch your film alone. No freshness, carelessness in creativity. You’ve become over-confident and you are losing touch with reality. You’re handing over creative work to the wrong people. You’re impulsively doing ten films at a time and not focusing on one project. You’ve enjoyed the shooting without caring about what the outcome would be. You’re busy giving stupid interviews. What have you done in the past seven years except a couple of notable films?”

I appreciate Ramu’s honesty though when he said “The above message shook me completely. It made me realize it’s time for me to do some serious re-thinking about my career.”

Identifying goals

This one is not as easy as it sounds. Pay attention, because it may be one of the most important things you read in your life.

What is it that you really want?

Take a pen and paper, or open notepad and scribble. Write down everything that you want in life. Don’t worry about how much is possible or not, or contradicting other things you want…… just list everything that occurs to you without “editing” it. We will not be editing it at all - ever. We will simply be organizing it.

Sounds impossible? Don’t bother about that. Right now, work on that list. Make that list something that will have your life totally “sorted out”.

Bookmark this page, or simply minimize this window and don’t move ahead of this for the next hour. Ideally, don’t even read ahead until then. Keep working on that list until sated, and do something else for an hour.

Great. Now, I assume you’re back after honestly spending that hour elsewhere.

Open that list and take a fresh sheet of paper, or open another blank document.

I want you to move items on that list up or down, depending on how important/urgent they are. Again, don’t worry about the possible or not. Ideas of possible and impossible change.

Juggle around with this list. Look at it in different ways. If you’re serious about this, I’ll recommend creating versions of this list based on a variety of factors - urgency, ease/difficulty of achieving, sets of items related with each other, and so on. Heck, why not, even create one based on how possible or impossible they seem (though ease and difficulty may address that).

Now, come back to the original list based on importance or urgency and pick up the first couple of items on that list and see where they stand on the others.

These few items are where most of your conscious efforts are going to be directed. Keep coming to this blog to find out how to deal with them individually, but suffice it to say for now, keep them in focus always. Print those lists out or take those papers and staple them together and stick them on top of your fridge or computer monitor, where they will be staring right back at you.

Why? Because they are a part of your life. In fact, this lack is an important influence on your life. It is your dissatisfaction and we are planning on turning this into motivation. For this to happen, it is important that you stop running away from them when you can and being overwhelmed when you can’t, and learn to be comfortable looking at them enough to be addressing them as the time comes.

In the coming posts, I will be dealing with very common items on people’s lists and seeing how they can be managed. It will not be easy, but its not particularly tough either. In the meanwhile, if you think there is any particular “item” you’d like me to address, feel free to drop in a comment, and I’ll give it a shot.

What makes me certain that this works - its what I’ve always been doing, and I have managed to create a life for myself where I am not highly educated, I’ve never had a job, and have changed professions too often to have “stable earnings” in any one, yet, I have never lacked for money (earnings, not inheritance), am a respected professional, and have achievements, sources of income in multiple fields, and a happy family life (well, as happy as chaos can get). I have never earned money from anything I don’t like to do, and I never have to land up anywhere for work that I don’t want to go. Do I sound like I know what I’m talking about?
